Leaders always have a vision. In Coach Carter , Ken Carter's vision was to give the team a better future away from crime. He emphasis's the fact that he's had first hand experience with troubled youths as he mentions most of his teammates in high school ended up either in prison or dead. Ken Carter wishes to implement change. He wants his players to overcome the educational system they are in that is designed for them to fail. Throughout the entire movie Ken Carter used various types of leadership styles to effectively reach his goal.
Transformational Leadership Transformational leadership is the ability of a leader to get people to do more than they originally expected to do in support of a large scale innovation and change. By inspiring the team, Coach Carter projected each player can achieve far more than they could ever imagine. As a team he made them suffer and triumph together. Carter had a positive influence on each player on his team and most importantly encouraged them all to work at their full potential. Something that made Coach Carter stand out was he did not only encourage them do well as basketball players, but by also maintaining a GPA of 2.3 or greater, this had given opportunity for senior players to graduate as well as further their academics and basketball career to the next level. Challenging the team to take greater ownership for their effort, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of followers were few of the many things he was able to accomplish while coaching the team.
Change Leader A change leader is a change agent who tries to change the behaviour of another person or social system. Coach Carter wanted to change the fact that society expected the students to fail in life. He continuously tried to change their lifestyle for the better and help the players realize there is so much more they can make of their own life. He showed them examples of what could happen if they went to college, reminded them they didn't need to live the same struggle their parents did.
Moral Leadership Moral Leadership is a very different kind of leadership. Rather than aspiring to being followed, Moral Leaders aim to serve. Instead of showcasing their own skills, Moral Leaders tend to develop the capacities of others. Coach Carter taught his team to respect eachother, and not use inappropriate words. He also tried to change the opinion of his team on what was good and right.
